Benefits of Massage Therapy for Anxiety and Depression

Massage Therapy Mississauga

Anxiety and depression are common yet serious disorders. Massage therapy may help. As we are registered massage therapist in Mississauga, you may easily reach us by searching Massage Therapy Mississauga.

An estimated 18% of adult Americans suffer from some type of anxiety disorder and approximately 10% suffer from some type of depression. These disorders may coexist and are often untreated. Depression and anxiety can interfere in social functioning and lead to increased risk of unemployment, illness, and even death. They can play an aggravating role in other health conditions and render an individual more vulnerable to disease. While anxiety and depression can often be treated successfully with medications, psychotherapy, or a combination of both, these options are not always sufficient, desirable, or available. Some individuals may be unable or unwilling to take medications because of health conditions, drug interactions, personal beliefs, or unpleasant side effects.

Psychotherapy is not available in all communities and may be prohibitively expensive and time-consuming. Social stigma may prevent some individuals from seeking treatment. Some individuals just don't respond well to conventional therapies. Clearly, an easily accessible treatment devoid of bothersome side effects could be helpful. As we are registered massage therapist in Mississauga, you may easily reach us by searching Massage Therapy Mississauga.

Research has shown that massage therapy can have a beneficial effect on both anxiety and depression.

Early research at the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami Medical School demonstrated that 30 minutes of daily massage therapy to hospitalized depressed adolescents over a 5 day period brought about an improvement in mood and behaviour. Since then, many studies have documented that massage therapy can have a beneficial effect on depression and anxiety. In fact, it is one of the most consistently documented results of massage.

Anxiety can be divided into two general classes: state anxiety and trait anxiety. State anxiety is a temporary reaction to a stressful situation. Trait anxiety is an ongoing, chronic state of anxiety. There are many specific anxiety disorders, such as panic attack disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, etc. Massage therapy has been shown to have at least mild benefit for both state and trait anxiety, and even a single session of massage may help to alleviate the symptoms of state anxiety. However, a series of massage sessions has been found to offer the most benefit and seems to be particularly helpful for trait anxiety disorders.

How does massage therapy work?

We don't exactly know how massage works to alleviate depression and anxiety. For many years, it was thought that massage reduced the stress hormone cortisol and this brought about the improvement. As we are registered massage therapist in Mississauga, you may easily reach us by searching Massage Therapy Mississauga. However, more recent research has shown that massage does not reduce cortisol in the way in which we thought. No one is exactly sure how massage effects change. Some hypotheses exist but do not have sufficient data to support them. Specific effects on the nervous system, hormones, neurotransmitters, etc., are still under investigation. We know that humans are biologically wired to respond to touch. Perhaps it is the combined effect of focused, caring attention and tactile stimulation, or perhaps the muscular relaxation signals the brain to shift to a more calm state. Fortunately, we do not need to understand precisely how this change comes about in order to benefit from it. As we learn more over time, it may help us understand how to optimize massage therapy's effects and help massage gain acceptance as a treatment for anxiety and depression.

Christopher Moyer, Ph.D., is a psychologist who has made significant contributions to the field of massage therapy research. His paper, Affective Massage Therapy, published in the peer-reviewed International Journal of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, describes some of the history of massage therapy research and, in particular, examines the research on massage and anxiety and depression. Moyer was co-editor of the book Massage Therapy, Integrating Research and Practice and wrote the chapter on anxiety and depression. In the "recommendations" section of the chapter, Moyer states:

Massage therapists can be confident that MT has been scientifically demonstrated to reduce anxiety and depression, and that the benefits are substantial. Indeed, there are probably no other effects in MT research that have been as consistently demonstrated as these mental health benefits.

Moyer takes care to point out that, like any treatment, individual responses will vary and massage therapy will not work the same for everyone. We still do not know the optimal amount and pattern of treatments to get the greatest effect.

Depression and anxiety can be very serious and massage therapy should not be a replacement for proper medical attention when it is needed. Clients and therapists alike should recognize its limitations. However, one of the advantages of massage therapy is the ease of access. No prescription is needed and one does not typically need to wait weeks or months for an appointment. Gentle massage should have no detrimental side effects and social stigma is generally absent. Mild benefit is often felt immediately and even greater benefit can come from a series of sessions. All these factors may make it an appealing resource for the person living with anxiety or depression.

Clients suffering from anxiety or depression should inform their massage therapist so they can treat appropriately. Professional massage therapists are expected to respect client confidentiality. Clients do not need to be embarrassed and do not need to reveal details which they might prefer to keep private.

Massage therapists should familiarize themselves with common mental health problems, assess anxiety and depression during intake, and inform clients who admit to anxiety or depression that massage therapy may help.

Living with anxiety and depression is a painful and distressing experience. Proper treatment is important. Massage therapy can be of benefit. Please, if you know someone who is suffering from anxiety and depression, urge them to get the care they need so that they can go on to live a more successful and productive life.

How to Fix Your Joints Including Back, Knees, Shoulders and Hips

Physio And Rehab Mississauga

As we are working in physiotherapy field since decades, you could easily find us by searching Physio And Rehab Mississauga. You may be wondering why I have chosen to address all these injuries together. The answer is that with all these injuries, I look at the cause of the problem and not the symptoms. With most joint or back problems the causes are the same. I will give you some of these answers shortly. However, this is not to say I do not use specific exercises to the relevant joint later on in the rehab phases. I do suggest specific exercises for each individual joint with newly developed stabilizing throughout the whole body,

Let us commence with what I feel is fundamental to any fitness goal including rehabilitation of joints. I believe you will feel fantastic if you abide by all of these.

The foundation is to start with a healthy body which is:

Good nutrition. This includes eating at least three meals a day. Each meal having the correct macro nutrient balance so that you are getting carbohydrates and some good fats and proteins, I can provide an exact idea of how to eat to your metabolic type or blood type. As we are working in physiotherapy field since decades, you could easily find us by searching Physio And Rehab Mississauga.

Hydration. It is important you are drinking only spring or filtered water. Do not drink unfiltered water, as this is full of chemicals harmful to your body. On average drink 2 to 3 litres of water per day.

Digestion. A poor digestive system is an important factor in any joint pain. If you are having digestion problems such as non regular emptying of bowels (what I call pooing), excessive gas bloating or burping. These are an indicator that you need to improve your hydration and nutrition or seek to eliminate beverages or foods which are causing intolerance to your stomach.

Well rested; this includes going to bed by 10:30 PM every night.

Eliminate Stress.

Movement. I suggest you do movement for half an hour everyday or 10000 steps per day.

Ensure you have correct Breathing technique.

Then the fun part...

Once these fundamentals are underway, I check or do a posture, strength and flexibility assessment. As everybody has a different posture and no one has a perfect posture, this along with any weaknesses and tightness throughout the body must be known in order to individually design corrective exercises for a patient with joint pain. Remember we want to find the cause and treat the cause with corrective exercises.

In particular, I test your core activation, glute activation, ability to neutralize your back, and your ability to extend your upper back. Most of my corrective exercises are all related to these chief problems causing the joint pains.

I would also mention very tight areas in the body can be released. This can help the body move more freely and be symmetrical with the other side. This is done by stretching, but additionally to stretching it is very important to use myofascial release techniques prior to stretching and release is much faster than stretching alone. For instance, sore knees can quickly feel better by deep firm massage to the thigh and outer thigh area ITB area. Other than massage, physio rollers, or balls can also be used. A word of warning not to over release an area without strengthening the correct areas. Logically your body has tightened up an area to reduce instability; this is why you need to strengthen the area after releasing area to prevent a long ability to injury. I strengthen and correct your core, glut and thoracic area to allow your body to move optimally again.

Once I have established and corrected lifestyle factors and causes of the injury based on my assessment of posture tightness and weaknesses I am then well-placed to design corrective exercise, including as mentioned previously the common areas of poor activation, the final phase of strengthening exercise will occur with integration of newly activated stabilising and tonic muscles. As we are working in physiotherapy field since decades, you could easily find us by searching Physio And Rehab Mississauga.

The Benefits of Massage Therapy on the Body

massage mississauga

Massage therapy is an alternative medicine that has been gaining in popularity at a rapid rate. The field of massage therapy has not only grown in size but also in the availability of therapists, massage studios and clinics that offer massage, we offer too at massage Mississauga . There is no question that most people would love to get a massage. What people don't realize about massage is that it not only feels good and relaxes the body, mind and spirit, but it actually is healing to the body, muscles and soft tissues.

Massage therapy dates back to the B.C. era to ancient civilizations such as Greek, Roman, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Egyptian and Mesopotamian. Now massage is all over the world. In China massage is considered part of their primary healthcare and is taught in medical schools. Massage therapy was introduced to the U.S. in the 1800's. However its progression in the American medical scene has been slow and rocky. Throughout the early 1900's massages influence decreased due to technological advancements in medicine, however massage regained its reputation in the early 60's and 70's as professional athletes began to use massage therapy within their health routine. One huge deterrent for massage therapy as an alternative medicine and as a profession was the unsavoury characters that used massage therapy to advertise sexual services.

Buying and selling sex or sexual services is illegal in the U.S. and several other countries. Therefore using the cover of massage Mississauga, massage parlours offer sexual services after the purchase of a massage. For a while massage had become infamous for this type of service, which damaged its reputation. Overtime, true masseurs slowly but surely regained the reputation of massage therapy as a therapeutic healing treatment.

Now massage is a huge industry with thousands of schools, clinics, and therapeutic work settings as well as licensing and credentialing within each state. We are registered in Mississauga and you may easily find us by searching massage Mississauga. Even though massage parlous still exist, their presence remains largely in the seedy hoods and ghettos. Today when you mention massage therapy people don't think of sexual favours but rather a relaxing and pleasing experience. Massage therapy has recovered its respect as a healing art through manipulation of the body and muscle tissue.

The average person would tell you that massage therapy involves rubbing the body with lotion or cream that is relaxing and feels good. This interpretation of massage, although correct in layman's terms doesn't explain what massage therapy is or how it affects the body. Massage therapists manipulate the soft tissues of the body to enhance function, promote relaxation, reduce muscle spasms, pain and inflammation, reduce nerve compression, decrease myofascial trigger points, increase range of motion and joint flexibility, reduce blood pressure, improve posture, calm the nervous system, and improve circulation.

Massage involves manual manipulation of the soft tissue through pressure, tension, motion, and vibration. Based upon specific patient problems will determine the areas that a massage therapist will work on. Techniques can be applied through the hands, fingers, elbows, knees, forearm, or feet depending upon the type of massage. As well as determining the specific tissue to target whether it be a muscle, tendon, ligament, skin, joint, connective tissue, lymphatic vessels or organ. There are numerous types of massage techniques. Some of the common massage techniques include Ayurvedic, deep tissue, sports massage, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, reflexology, medical massage, Swedish massage, stone massage, Thai massage, and shiatsu. In addition to the techniques, there are several different strokes that massage therapist must use such as effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, mobilization, trigger point therapy, neuro-muscular, manual lymphatic drainage and manual traction.

Although massage is considered a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), it is becoming increasingly part of the medical world. Massage has a variety of settings including health clubs, health clinics, doctor offices, private offices, nursing homes, sports facilities and hospital settings. Massage therapy is used in conjunction with several other medical professions such as chiropractic, acupuncture, physical therapy, personal training and sports trainers.

Whatever the reason you get a massage, it is a great therapeutic modality to relieve stress, tension, anxiety, headaches, neck pain, back pain and several other physical or mental problems. If you haven't experienced a massage yet then its time you had one. Many people include massage in their health regimen because it not only has positive effects on the body but on the mind and spirit as well. As your friends for recommendations of a therapist near you!

It is a profession in which the therapist applies some manual techniques, and may apply at adjunctive therapies. These techniques when applied have the sole intention of trying to positively affect the health and well-being of the client.

So where did massage therapy come from?

The word massage is most likely to have emerged from the Greek word 'Massein', meaning 'to knead' or the Arabic word 'mash' meaning 'to press softly'. Massage is really the oldest form of physical medicine known to man. We are here to serve you at massage therapy Mississauga. It can be traced all the way back to the early Chinese medical manuscripts around 400BC. Hippocrates was known to advocate massage. And he was born in the fifth century and was also known as "the father of medicine". It was used and written about in Roman times, with history recording Julius Caesar had received massage to help relieve neuralgia!

Massage therapy dates back thousands of years. Ancient writings of many cultures have referenced the term massage.

They included:

ancient Greek

ancient Rome

China

Japan

Egypt

Indian subcontinent

In the United States massage therapy became popular for a variety of health purposes in about that mid 1800's. Around the 1930s and 1940s massage therapy fell out of favour. This was because of scientific and technological advances in medical treatments. Massage therapy interest was revived in the 1970s. Athletes were the one who mainly used this form of therapy back then.

There are over 80 types of massage therapy. Most of the time what happens is when people find a method or two that they like, they will usually stick with their practitioner who use this form of therapy. Then there are times when people find a particular massage therapist that makes them feel comfortable and that individual will remain a loyal customer to this particular massage therapist.

The first thing that will happen is the massage therapist will review your symptoms and needs. They will then ask you questions about your problem and conditions.

There are a variety of massage techniques that are used to help with the following:

reduce tension and pain

improve blood flow

relax muscles and provide a sense of well-being and relaxation

Massage therapy is really a hands-on manipulation of soft tissues and joints of the body. The soft tissues include:

muscle

skin

tendon

associated fascia

ligaments

joint capsules

Although it largely affects those muscles just under the skin, massage therapies benefits may also reach the deeper layers of muscle and possibly even the organs themselves. Massage also stimulates blood circulation and assists the lymphatic system (which runs parallel to the circulatory system), this helps to eliminate waste thought-out the body.

The purpose of massage therapy is to prevent, develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function or relieve pain. It is also a clinically oriented health option with undeniable result in relief from an array of discomforts that include stress, muscular overuse and many other chronic pain syndromes. If employed early enough after accidents involving trauma and injury, massage therapy can greatly reduce the development of painful muscular patterning.

What the massage therapist will do is press, stroke, rub to try and manipulate the muscles and other soft tissue with particular focus on muscles and pressure points. Pressing and kneading different areas of the body to relieve pain, relax, stimulate, and tone the body. This will often happen using various pressure and movement. The therapist use their hands, fingers, forms, elbows, and sometimes feet.

With the goal to relax the soft tissues, help to increase the delivery of blood and oxygen to the massaged areas, reduce tension, relax muscles, decrease pain and provide a sense of well-being and relaxation.

Some of the popular types of massage are:

Swedish

Deep tissue

Trigger point

Reflexology

With the popularity in "massage" today, you should only get your massage from someone who uses the title "massage" (MT). This person has completed a diploma program at a recognized school and has passed an examination. When you are out looking for a qualified therapist look for someone who uses a massage therapist (MT) or registered massage therapist (RMT) as their title.

When is a time when massage therapy is not the right treatment?

If you suffer from certain circulatory ailments (such as phlebitis), infectious diseases, certain forms of cancer, cardiac problems, certain skin conditions, or any inflamed or infected tissues, be sure to consult your physician before initiating any massage program. An experienced massage therapist will also be able to tell you when massage is not indicated.
